Microsoft hasnt offered any official numbers on the amount of Windows Phone devices sold so far, but according to research firm Gartner there were quite a lot sold in Q4 2012.
According to Gartner?s worldwide smartphone sales numbers for the quarter Windows Phone-based smartphone sales increased 6.1855 million units for the quarter, which is a 124.6 percent year-on-year increase. In Q4 2011, Microsoft had launched Windows Phone 7.5 and only 2.759 million devices were sold. Microsoft?s overall marketshare also went up three percent in Q4 2012, compared to the 1.8 percent it did last year. That being said, Blackberry?s marketshare still managed to stay ahead of Windows Phone though.
The total overall number of smartphones sold came in at 207.7 million units in 2012, which is up 38.3 percent compared to 2011. Ofcourse Android had the largest market share at 69.7 percent, followed by iOS with 20.9 percent.
Total mobile phone sales were down 1.7 percent from 2011 though. In terms of manufacturers, Samsung (64.5 million units sold) and Apple (43.5 million units sold) together made up over 52 percent of smartphones sold in the quarter, compared to the 46 percent in Q3, and Huawei had a 73.8 percent jump from last year with 27.2 million handsets sold in Q4 2012. Nokia dropped 53.6 percent from last year with 39.3 million units sold. Hopefully their Windows Phone 8 Lumias will boost that number though.
