- A question both Leigh and Lisa ponder is, ?Why is it acceptable to say you can?t do math when it is a mark of shame to say you can?t read??
- How do you talk to your children about math? Would you ever use the phrase ?the magnificent number three??
- When we pass over the numbers in Scripture, we miss just as much richness as we do if we skip the geography or history surrounding it. Leigh describes the mathematical nature of the Trinity as a function of multiplication, not addition: 1 x 1 x 1 = 1, not 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.
- Mathematics: Is God Silent, by James Nickel, is another deep well of thinking about math. Listen to the archive of Leigh?s interview with Nickel on a previous Leigh @ Lunch: Leigh Interviews James D. Nickel.
- The best lessons happen when you know the material well enough that you can focus instead on where your students are. Practice lumping concepts together to maximize your time. Start with definitions of new concepts; then compare to familiar concepts.
- Lisa asks parents gently to consider, ?What is your ultimate goal?? To finish a book and receive a credit; or to master a concept and find joy in learning math?
- A specific math curriculum for very young children is less important than cultivating the habit of doing math every day.
- For parents seeking workbooks that will teach the basic grammar of math, keep your eyes open for a new PreScripts book, coming soon from Classical Conversations MultiMedia, that will combine simple drawing lessons with cursive copywork of basic math terms?perfect for integrating math sense with other subjects!
- From early middle school on, it is helpful to choose one math ?spine? and stick with it. Skipping around between curricula, you may miss a foundational concept that is taught earlier in your new series than it would have been in your old series.
- CC recommends Saxon Math as a consistent reference book that gives continuity to your math education. Read Leigh?s explanation of why she likes Saxon Math.
- If children grow weary of the memory work they are learning, rather than abandoning the content, switch up your methods?try singing a memory song backwards! Encourage them to begin asking questions about the facts they are memorizing, and then show them how to find the answers. The glossary and table of contents in the book will be your best friends.
- Stay tuned! Leigh?s newest book The Question: Teaching Your Child the Essentials of Classical Education will be coming out this fall! What The Core did for the grammar stage of learning, this book does for the dialectic, teaching you how to use many questions to move your students into greater understanding as they reach the middle- and early high-school years of homeschooling.
- Caleb asked, ?Is everyone capable of having a proficient skill set in all the arts (math, music, writing?), or are some people utterly unable to do one of those things??
- ?We may not all be an artist in every arena, but we can be an art critic in every arena,? Leigh responds. ?And we can ask good questions,? Lisa adds.
